What is Paraleagal?
Legist Legal Services LLP is a Paralegal firm licensed by The Law Society of Upper Canada and is an independent practice. We are subject to the same legal principals and ethical professional standards as lawyers. The difference between a paralegal and a lawyer is their education and scope of practice. To receive a Paralegal license an individual must complete an accredited post-secondary diploma, pass the licensing exam and meet mandatory "good character" requirements. To be able to practice, a Paralegal should also be insured. A paralegal’s scope of practice does not include Real Estate, Family matters, Wills and Estates, Power of Attorney and Civil and Criminal Courts (except Summary Convictions). Another difference is the fees a lawyer would charge as opposed to a Paralegal who would be more cost-effective. Paralegals are competent in the areas that are within the permitted scope and most matters are referred to us by lawyers. After all, the hourly rates charged by a law firm are usually unreasonable when dealing with a Traffic Ticket or Small Claims matter.
